Overview
What bird proofing actually involves
Birds nesting under solar panels cause fouling, debris and blocked gutters. A guard system closes the gap for good.
What it is
Bird proofing is the physical exclusion of pigeons and other nesting birds from the spaces they colonise, most often the gap beneath solar panels, using mesh guard systems, and from ledges and problem areas using bird spikes.
Who it is for
Homeowners with solar PV, landlords with recurring fouling complaints, and commercial clients with pigeon activity on ledges, signage and parapets.
When it is needed
As soon as you hear activity under the panels or see droppings and nesting material on the roof, and ideally outside the main nesting season so the space can be cleared and closed responsibly.
Why professional help matters
A colony under a solar array does not move on by itself. Every year it grows: more debris in the gutters, more fouling down the roof and walls, and reduced airflow and output from the panels themselves.
What's included
- Cage / guard system fitted to solar panels
- Bird spikes for ledges and problem areas
- Available for residential and commercial properties
- Fitted alongside roof or gutter cleaning where useful
Pricing
Bird Proofing is priced per property based on size, access and condition, and confirmed in a written quote valid for 30 days. Payment is by bank transfer against an invoice, or cash; we do not currently take card payments.

What it costs to wait
What happens if it is left
Gutters block repeatedly
Nesting material is constantly displaced and washes straight into the gutter run, so you pay for clearance again and again while the cause stays in place.
Fouling damages surfaces
Droppings are acidic. Left on tiles, panels, render and paving they stain persistently and degrade finishes.
Solar output falls
Debris and fouling across the panel faces and blocked airflow beneath the array both reduce yield, so you lose generation you have already paid for.
It escalates every season
Birds return to a proven nesting site and bring others. What is one pair this year is a colony in three.
Common mistakes we get called in to fix
- Clearing the nest but leaving the gap open, so the birds are back within weeks
- Fitting cheap plastic mesh that degrades in UV within a couple of seasons
- Blocking the array without first removing the debris underneath
- Fitting anything during active nesting without regard for the legal protections on nesting birds
- Fixing through panel frames or roof tiles and creating a leak where there was none
Our process
How the job runs, start to finish
Step 1
Inspection
We establish where the birds are getting in, how established the nesting is, the panel array layout and mounting type, and check whether the gutters are already carrying displaced debris.
Step 2
Diagnosis
Panel arrays get a clipped mesh guard system around the perimeter; ledges, parapets and signage get spikes. Any active nesting is handled with regard to the legal protections that apply, and timing is agreed with you.
Step 3
Execution
Existing nesting material and fouling are cleared, the roof and gutters are cleaned down, and the guard system is clipped to the panel frames or spikes are bedded to the ledge, with no penetrations through tiles.
Step 4
Verification
Before the vans move, the work is walked with you or photographed end to end. Gutters are flow-checked, surfaces are inspected in daylight, and anything we found along the way, a slipped tile, a split downpipe, a failing joint, is reported in writing rather than left for you to discover.
Step 5
Completion and guarantee
The site is cleared, planting is rinsed off and your invoice follows by email. Where the service carries a guarantee, the terms are confirmed in writing with the date the cover runs from, and low-cost retreatment is offered before the cover lapses rather than after.
Benefits
What you get for the money
Speed
Most domestic solar arrays are cleared and guarded within a day.
Safety
Working-at-height qualified operatives (IPAF and PASMA) with proper access equipment, up to three storeys as standard.
Longevity
A clipped mesh guard is a permanent physical exclusion, not a deterrent that stops working.
Cost savings
Ends repeat gutter clearance callouts and recovers the solar generation you are currently losing to fouling and debris.
Reliability
Fitted alongside roof or gutter cleaning where useful, so one visit resolves the cause and the consequences together.
Peace of mind
No more scratching and cooing above the bedroom ceiling at five in the morning.
In detail
Bird Proofing: methods, materials and variations
Materials and systems
Solar panel guards use galvanised or PVC-coated mesh clipped to the panel frames with stainless fixings: no drilling into panels, frames or tiles, so warranties and weatherproofing stay intact. Bird spikes come in stainless steel and polycarbonate, bedded onto ledges, parapets, signage and pipework. Materials are chosen for UV stability, because cheap mesh fails within a couple of British summers.
Method detail
Debris removal comes first: a guard fitted over an existing nest simply traps the problem. The roof and gutters are cleared and washed down, the array perimeter is measured, and mesh is cut and clipped panel by panel so it sits flush and stays invisible from the ground. Spike installation follows the ledge profile, with continuous coverage rather than gaps that birds quickly learn to exploit.
Variations of the service
Full solar array perimeter guarding, partial guarding where only one section is affected, spike systems for ledges, parapets, chimneys and commercial signage, and combined packages with roof cleaning and gutter clearance, which is how most customers book it, since the roof usually needs cleaning by the time nesting is noticed.
Situations this applies to
Any roof-mounted solar PV array with an open perimeter gap, terraces and semis where one property's colony affects the whole row, commercial units with pigeon activity on parapets and signage, and buildings near open farmland or water where bird pressure is highest.
Residential and commercial differences
Domestic work centres on solar arrays and is a one-visit job. Commercial bird proofing covers larger ledge and parapet runs, signage and service areas, with RAMS and method statements on request where the public is present, and access equipment planned in advance.
Our method on your property
Existing nesting debris is cleared, then guards or spikes are fitted to the affected areas.

Questions
Bird Proofing FAQs
How much does bird proofing cost?
It is priced by the array perimeter or ledge length, plus any clearance and cleaning needed first, and confirmed in a written quote valid for 30 days.
How long does it take?
Most domestic solar arrays are cleared and guarded in a single day, including the roof and gutter clean-down.
Will you drill into my solar panels or roof?
No. Guard mesh is clipped to the panel frames with purpose-made fixings, so there are no penetrations through panels or tiles.
Will it affect my solar warranty or output?
The fixings are non-invasive, and removing fouling and debris typically improves output rather than reducing it.
What about birds currently nesting?
Nesting birds carry legal protections. We assess the situation on inspection and agree timing with you rather than disturbing an active nest.
How long does the guard system last?
It is a permanent physical exclusion. We use UV-stable, corrosion-resistant materials specifically so it does not need redoing in a few seasons.
Do you clear the mess first?
Always. Nesting material and fouling are removed and the roof and gutters are cleaned down before anything is fitted.
Do you fit bird spikes on commercial buildings?
Yes: ledges, parapets, signage and pipework, with RAMS and method statements provided on request.
Can you do it at the same time as roof cleaning?
Yes, and it is the most cost-effective way to book it since the access is already in place.
Which areas do you cover?
Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire, Northamptonshire and the surrounding counties.
