Overview
What driveway cleaning actually involves
A driveway is the first thing anyone sees. We lift years of algae, weed growth and ingrained dirt, then re-sand the joints so the paving locks back together properly.
What it is
Driveway cleaning is the deep cleaning of block paving, concrete, slabbed and resin-bound hard standing, including clearing weed and moss growth out of the joints and re-sanding block paving with kiln-dried sand.
Who it is for
Homeowners whose driveway has greened or gone patchy, sellers preparing for viewings, landlords between tenancies, and commercial clients with parking areas and service yards.
When it is needed
When the surface has gone green or black, when weeds are appearing through the joints, when blocks have started to rock or shift underfoot, or before a property goes on the market.
Why professional help matters
Block paving depends on sand in the joints for its structural interlock. As sand washes out, blocks move, joints widen, weeds root and the surface starts to fail. Cleaning without re-sanding accelerates that, which is why re-sanding is included here as standard.
What's included
- Re-sanding with kiln-dried sand included as standard
- Block paving, concrete and slabbed hard standing
- Priced by size
- One-off or repeat cleaning
Pricing
Driveway Cleaning starts from £245 + VAT. Final pricing depends on the size, access and condition of the property, and is confirmed in a written quote valid for 30 days. Payment is by bank transfer against an invoice, or cash; we do not currently take card payments.

What it costs to wait
What happens if it is left
The paving loses its interlock
Empty joints mean each block carries load alone instead of sharing it. Blocks rock, edges chip, and sunken tyre tracks appear where vehicles turn.
Weeds widen the joints
Roots work down into the bedding layer, lift blocks and open gaps that fill with more debris, giving the next generation of weeds a better start.
Algae makes it genuinely slippery
A green driveway is a slip hazard for anyone carrying shopping or getting out of a car in the wet, a real liability at a commercial property.
Deferred cleaning becomes relaying
Left long enough, the fix stops being a clean and becomes a lift-and-relay, which is an order of magnitude more expensive.
Common mistakes we get called in to fix
- Cleaning the paving and never replacing the joint sand, which speeds up block movement
- Using building sand instead of kiln-dried sand, which cakes and will not settle into the joints
- Zig-zag lance marks from an uncontrolled pressure washer, which stripe the surface permanently
- Weedkiller alone, which kills the top growth and leaves the root mass in the joint
- Sealing the drive in unreliable British weather before the surface is properly dry
Our process
How the job runs, start to finish
Step 1
Inspection
We check the surface type, the depth of joint sand remaining, drainage falls, any sunken or rocking blocks, and where the water will go while we work.
Step 2
Diagnosis
Surface condition sets the method and pressure. Older or softer slabs and porcelain are treated differently to robust concrete block paving, and anything requiring a repair rather than a clean is flagged before we quote.
Step 3
Execution
The full area is cleaned in overlapping passes so there are no stripes, weeds and detritus are removed from the joints, silt is flushed away, and kiln-dried sand is brushed and vibrated back into block paving once the surface has dried.
Step 4
Verification
Before the vans move, the work is walked with you or photographed end to end. Gutters are flow-checked, surfaces are inspected in daylight, and anything we found along the way, a slipped tile, a split downpipe, a failing joint, is reported in writing rather than left for you to discover.
Step 5
Completion and guarantee
The site is cleared, planting is rinsed off and your invoice follows by email. Where the service carries a guarantee, the terms are confirmed in writing with the date the cover runs from, and low-cost retreatment is offered before the cover lapses rather than after.
Benefits
What you get for the money
Speed
Most domestic driveways are cleaned and re-sanded within a day.
Safety
Algae and moss removed from the whole surface, including the shaded edges people actually slip on.
Longevity
Re-sanded joints restore the interlock, keeping the paving stable and slowing weed return.
Cost savings
A clean and re-sand costs a fraction of lifting and relaying paving that has been allowed to move.
Reliability
Priced by size and confirmed in writing, with one-off or repeat cleaning available.
Peace of mind
Fully insured, directly employed operatives and a tidy site at the end of the day.
In detail
Driveway Cleaning: methods, materials and variations
Surfaces and materials
Concrete block paving, clay pavers, imprinted and brushed concrete, natural stone setts, Indian sandstone, porcelain and slabbed hard standing. Each has its own tolerance: concrete block takes a firm surface clean, clay pavers need care at the arrises, sandstone and porcelain are cleaned at reduced pressure to protect the face and pointing, and imprinted concrete is cleaned gently because the coloured surface layer is thin.
Method and equipment
We use rotary surface cleaners rather than a hand-held lance across open areas: even coverage, no wand stripes and far less overspray. Edges, kerbs and awkward corners are then detailed by hand. Silt is flushed to the drainage point rather than pushed into the borders, and joints are re-sanded once the blocks are dry enough to accept it.
Variations of the service
Full clean and re-sand for block paving, clean-only for concrete and slabbed areas, path and step cleaning as an add-on, and scheduled annual or biannual cleaning for properties under trees. We do not generally offer sealing: the British climate makes scheduling a reliably dry sealing window impractical, and we would rather say so than take the money.
Situations this applies to
Driveways under overhanging trees, north-facing frontages, properties on clay where blocks have started to settle, rental properties between tenancies, and any home going to market where the driveway is the first thing a buyer sees.
Residential and commercial differences
Domestic drives are typically a single day with vehicles moved off for the duration. Commercial parking areas and service yards are quoted by square metreage, scheduled out of hours where trading allows, and delivered with RAMS and method statements on request.
Our method on your property
Controlled surface cleaning across the full area, weeds and detritus removed from joints, then fresh kiln-dried sand brushed in.

Questions
Driveway Cleaning FAQs
How much does driveway cleaning cost in Milton Keynes?
Driveway cleaning starts from £245 + VAT and is priced by size. Kiln-dried re-sanding of block paving is included in that price, not added afterwards.
How long does it take?
Most domestic driveways are completed within a day, including re-sanding. Larger areas and commercial yards are quoted with a duration up front.
Is re-sanding really included?
Always, on block paving. Sand in the joints is what keeps the paving stable, so cleaning without replacing it would leave the driveway worse off.
Do you seal driveways?
Generally no. Sealing needs a genuinely dry surface and a dry weather window, and the British climate makes that unreliable enough that we would rather not promise it.
Will the weeds come back?
Freshly re-sanded joints are far more resistant, but airborne seed will eventually settle. Most customers on tree-lined roads book a clean every one to two years to stay ahead of it.
Will cleaning damage my block paving?
Not when the pressure and method are matched to the surface. We use rotary surface cleaners for even coverage rather than a hand-held lance that leaves stripes.
Can you clean patios and paths at the same time?
Yes, and it is usually cheaper to do so in the same visit than to book them separately.
Do I need to be home?
Not necessarily, as long as we have access to the driveway and an outside tap or agreed water source, and vehicles are moved off before we arrive.
Do you offer repeat cleaning?
Yes, one-off or scheduled repeat cleaning across every service, with a discount when neighbouring properties book together.
Which areas do you cover?
Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire, Northamptonshire and the surrounding counties.
